Door glass replacement
Replacement of the side window that rolls up and down in your door — including full fragment extraction from the door cavity and a regulator check before we call it done.
Door glass is tempered, so when it goes it goes completely — a curtain of small granules into the door cavity, the seat rails, the door pocket and the carpet. The replacement pane is the straightforward part. Getting every fragment out of the door is the job.
This matters more than it sounds. Glass left in the bottom of the door sits in the drain channels and against the regulator mechanism. That is where the rattle over every expansion joint comes from, and where a regulator that was fine develops a grinding noise six months later.

When you need door glass replacement
- A side window has been smashed, most often in a break-in.

What actually happens
The job, step by step
No mystery and no jargon for its own sake. This is what a technician does and why each step matters.
Secure and assess
The opening is made safe and the door trim removed to see what actually failed — glass alone, or glass plus regulator.
Extract the fragments
Vacuum out the door cavity, the drain channels, the seat rails and the carpet. This is the longest step and the one that determines whether the door is quiet afterwards.
Check the regulator and channel
The run channel and regulator are inspected. A break-in often bends clips or damages the channel, and fitting new glass to a damaged mechanism just breaks the new glass.
Fit and align
The new pane is set into the regulator clips and aligned so it seats squarely into the upper seal without binding.
Cycle and verify
The window is run through its full travel repeatedly, checked for square seating, wind noise and water intrusion, and the trim and vapour barrier are refitted correctly.

What moves the price
We do not publish a fixed price, because there is not one. These are the variables that decide your quote.
- Which door
- Front and rear door glass are different parts, and rear glass on some body styles is a fixed pane with a separate movable section.
- Laminated or tempered
- Some newer vehicles use laminated side glass for acoustic and security reasons. It costs more.
- Privacy tint
- Factory-tinted glass is a different part number from clear.
- Regulator condition
- If the regulator or clips were damaged, that is a separate repair and it has to be done for the new glass to survive.
- Extent of the clean-up
- A window that shattered days ago and has been driven on has spread fragments considerably further.
How long it takes
Commonly a single visit with no adhesive cure, so the vehicle is usable straight away. Add time if the regulator also needs work.
Mobile service
Well suited to mobile work, and frequently urgent after a break-in. A level space and access to both sides of the door is all that is needed.

Afterwards
Looking after the work
- Expect to find the occasional stray granule for a week or so. That is normal even after thorough extraction — fragments work loose from the seals.
- If the window develops a new rattle or grinding noise, call. That is a clean-up or alignment issue, not something to live with.
- If it was a break-in, photograph the damage before repair for your insurer and your police report.
Questions we actually get asked
How quickly can you replace a smashed door window?
It depends on glass availability for your specific vehicle, and this is genuinely urgent since the vehicle is not secure. Call rather than emailing and we will tell you honestly what the timing looks like.
Is it the glass or the regulator?
A useful test: if the glass is intact but will not move, sits crooked, or drops into the door, that points at the regulator. If the glass is gone, it is glass — and possibly both. We check the regulator during the job either way.
Will my insurance cover a break-in?
Vehicle glass broken in a break-in is generally a comprehensive claim, and the deductible is the deciding factor. Get a police report — most carriers want one for theft-related damage.
Can I drive with the window covered in plastic?
Short distances at low speed, yes. Plastic sheeting keeps rain out and does nothing against theft, it is loud at highway speed, and it tends to come loose on the road. Treat it as a stopgap measure only.
