Sunroof and moonroof glass replacement
Replacement of a cracked or shattered sunroof panel, plus a check of the drain channels — which are the actual cause of most sunroof water complaints.
Sunroof glass is tempered, and when it fails it usually fails spectacularly — often with a loud report and granules across the entire cabin. Spontaneous failures happen too, particularly on large panoramic panels under Texas summer heat, and they are unnerving when they do.
The part people miss is drainage. Every sunroof leaks by design: water gets past the seal and is carried away by drain tubes running down the pillars. When those tubes clog with debris, water backs up and appears inside the cabin — and the sunroof gets blamed for a problem that is actually a blocked tube. We check the drains whenever we are in there, because replacing glass while leaving the drains clogged solves nothing.

What actually happens
The job, step by step
No mystery and no jargon for its own sake. This is what a technician does and why each step matters.
Assess the assembly, not just the glass
Confirm whether the panel alone failed or whether the cassette, guides or motor were damaged. On a shattered panel it is worth checking the mechanism before ordering.
Contain and extract
Granules from a shattered roof panel land across the whole interior — seats, console, rear footwells, and into the sunroof cassette itself. Extraction from the cassette matters, because fragments there jam the mechanism later.
Remove the panel
The glass is unbolted or unbonded from its carriers depending on design, without disturbing the alignment of the cassette.
Clear and test the drains
Drain channels at each corner are cleared and flow-tested. This is the step that prevents the leak complaint that would otherwise follow.
Fit and align
The new panel is mounted and its height adjusted so it sits flush with the roof line — a panel proud of the roof whistles, one sitting low collects water.
Cycle and water-test
Full open and close travel, tilt function, and a water test over the seals and drains.

What moves the price
We do not publish a fixed price, because there is not one. These are the variables that decide your quote.
- Panel size
- A large panoramic panel is substantially more expensive than a conventional sunroof pane.
- Fixed or opening
- An opening panel involves the carriers and mechanism; a fixed panoramic panel is usually bonded.
- Mechanism damage
- If the cassette, guides or motor were damaged, that is separate from the glass.
- Solar or acoustic coating
- Tinted, solar-reflective and acoustic panels cost more.
- Interior extraction
- A shattered roof panel distributes glass across the entire cabin, including into the cassette.
How long it takes
Generally longer than a side window. Alignment is fussy — the panel has to sit flush — and any bonded element needs cure time.
Mobile service
Often possible, but this one benefits from shade and shelter more than most. An open roof aperture and a sudden Texas downpour is a bad combination, so we are conservative about scheduling these in unsettled weather.

Looking after the work
- Have the drain channels cleared periodically, particularly if you park under trees. It is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent sunroof leaks.
- Do not force the panel if it hesitates — that is how a mechanism problem becomes an expensive one.
- Expect to find stray granules for a while after a shattered panel; they lodge in the headliner edges.
Questions we actually get asked
My sunroof shattered on its own. How?
It happens, and it is more common on large panoramic panels. Tempered glass carries internal stress by design, and a small edge defect, a stone strike on the roof, or thermal stress from severe heat can be enough to release it. That is why it fails all at once rather than cracking.
Water is dripping from my sunroof. Do I need new glass?
Usually not. Most sunroof leaks are blocked drain tubes, not failed glass. Every sunroof lets some water past the seal by design and drains it down tubes in the pillars; when those clog, the water backs up into the cabin. Clearing the drains fixes the majority of these complaints.
Can a cracked sunroof be repaired?
No. Sunroof panels are tempered, and tempered glass cannot be resin-repaired.
Is it safe to drive with a shattered sunroof?
Get the aperture covered first. Beyond weather and security, remaining glass around the edges can work loose at speed. Cover it and treat it as urgent.
