Repair or replace? A Dallas driver's windshield decision guide
Four things decide it — size, depth, location and age. Most people get the first one right and ignore the other three.

Four things decide whether your windshield can be repaired: size, depth, location and age. Most people assess the first one and ignore the other three, which is why the answer they expect and the answer they get sometimes differ.
Here is how each one works, so you can make a reasonable assessment before anyone quotes you.
Start here: what a repair actually is
A repair is not cosmetic filler. Resin is injected under pressure into the void, worked into the legs of the break, and cured with ultraviolet light. It restores structural continuity to the outer layer and most of the optical clarity.
What it does not do is make the damage vanish. A faint blemish almost always remains. Anyone promising a chip will disappear completely is overselling, and you will be disappointed at handover.
When repair is genuinely available it is the better outcome: faster, cheaper, and it leaves the factory glass-to-body seal untouched. That factory seal was made in a controlled environment and is the seal least likely to ever leak. Every replacement, however well executed, replaces it with a field-made one.
1. Size
The rough working thresholds:

These are working guides, not physics. A four-inch crack at the edge of the glass is a worse prospect than a six-inch crack in the middle, which brings us to the factor that matters more than size.
2. Location — the one people underestimate
Edge damage is the important case. A break that reaches within roughly two inches of the perimeter is usually a replacement, regardless of how small it is.
The edge is where the glass is bonded to the body, and it is where stress concentrates — from body flex, from door slams, from thermal expansion. A crack that reaches the edge has found the most favourable possible conditions to run, and it will. Repairing it puts resin into a fracture that is going to keep growing anyway.
Damage in your line of sight is a judgement call, and our advice is generally to replace. Even an excellent repair leaves slight optical distortion. Distortion directly in your primary field of view is worth avoiding — you will notice it at night, in rain, and against oncoming headlights, and you cannot un-notice it.
Damage over the camera is its own case. If your vehicle has a forward camera behind the mirror, damage in the area it looks through can interfere with what it sees. That area is usually a replacement.
3. Depth
A windshield is laminated: two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer.
If only the outer layer is broken, repair is on the table. If the damage has gone through to the inner layer, or penetrated the interlayer, it is not — a repair only addresses the outer layer.
A rough test you can do yourself: run a fingernail along the inside of the glass at the damage. If you can feel the break from inside the cabin, the inner layer is involved and you are looking at replacement.
4. Age — the one that is actually urgent
This is the factor most within your control and most commonly wasted.
A chip is an open void. From the moment it forms it collects road dirt, wax, water and air. Resin cannot bond well to a contaminated fracture surface, and it cannot displace water already sitting in the break.
A chip repaired within days comes out close to clear. The same chip repaired three months later comes out cloudy, because the technician is filling a dirty void.
There is also the thermal problem. Dallas gives glass a hard time — direct sun onto a dark dash, then air conditioning onto hot glass, then a cool morning, then sun again. The practical advice is dull but correct: get it looked at within days, not months, and keep clear tape over it until then.
Quick self-assessment
Work down the list. Any single yes points toward replacement:
- Is the damage longer than about six inches?
- Does it reach within two inches of the edge?
- Is it in your primary line of sight?
- Can you feel it from inside the cabin?
- Are there three or more separate breaks?
- Does the break have legs radiating out from it?
- Is it in the area the forward camera looks through?
- Has it been there for months, collecting dirt?
- Has it already grown since you first noticed it?
All no? A repair is likely available, and worth doing quickly.
The cost dimension
Two things worth knowing before you decide:
Many insurers waive the deductible on a repair. A repair costs a carrier a fraction of a replacement, so funding one is in their interest. Replacement cost is not one number. It moves with trim, glass features, and whether the vehicle needs camera recalibration afterwards. A base model and a loaded version of the same vehicle can differ substantially.
How a technician actually assesses it
Useful to know, because it explains why a photo sometimes is not enough.
Light from behind. The first thing done is looking at the break with light passing through the glass rather than bouncing off it. Contamination, trapped moisture and the true extent of the legs are only visible that way. A break that looks like a simple bullseye in a photograph frequently has fine legs that only appear backlit.
The fingernail test, both sides. Outside tells you how open the pit is. Inside tells you whether the inner layer is involved — and that single check decides repairability more often than size does.
Probing the legs. Running a fingernail along each leg establishes whether it is a surface line or an open fracture. Open legs take resin. Tight ones may not.
Checking the perimeter. Measuring the distance to the nearest edge, because under two inches usually changes the answer regardless of everything else.
Looking at the camera zone. On an ADAS vehicle, whether the damage sits in the area the forward camera looks through.

What if you get the decision wrong?
Both errors have a cost, and they are not symmetric.
Repairing something that should have been replaced. The repair does not hold, the crack runs anyway, and you have spent money on a repair plus the replacement you were always going to need. Annoying, and recoverable.
Replacing something that could have been repaired. You spent several hundred dollars unnecessarily, lost the factory glass-to-body seal, and — on a modern vehicle — triggered a camera recalibration that was not needed either.
The second is the more expensive mistake, and it is the one the industry has an incentive to make. It is why we would rather tell you a chip is still repairable and take the smaller job.
Multiple chips: the arithmetic changes
One chip is a straightforward repair decision. Three or more changes it, for two reasons.
Structurally, several breaks across one pane means several stress concentrators. Repairing all of them restores a lot of individual voids but leaves glass that has taken a lot of punishment.
Optically, each repair leaves a faint blemish. Three faint blemishes across your field of view add up to something you notice.
The practical threshold most technicians work to is around three breaks — beyond that, replacement usually gives the better outcome even where each individual chip would have been repairable alone.

The DIY kit question
Parts stores sell resin kits for around the price of a coffee, and people reasonably ask whether they work.
Sometimes, on the simplest bullseye. The resin chemistry is broadly comparable.
What they cannot do is pull vacuum. A professional repair draws air and trapped moisture out of the fracture before injecting, in repeated cycles. That step determines clarity, and a syringe pressed against the glass cannot do it. The result is typically cloudy.
The real risk is that it is one-way. A partially filled break with cured resin in it cannot be repaired properly afterwards — there is nowhere for good resin to go. A DIY attempt on a repairable chip can convert it into a replacement.

Timing, seasonally
In North Texas the calendar genuinely affects this decision.
February–March is the best time to deal with an existing chip. You are ahead of hail season, and ahead of the summer thermal cycling that turns stable chips into cracks.
April–June is hail season. A chip is a weak point, and hail finds weak points. A repairable chip in February is frequently a replacement in May.

October brings a second, smaller hail peak that catches people out.
The pattern is consistent: a chip that appears in autumn and gets ignored is usually a replacement by the following summer.
If it is a replacement
Two things to plan for that people forget:
- Drive-away time. The adhesive needs to reach minimum strength before the vehicle is safe to drive. See safe drive-away time.
