Why windshield cracks spread in Texas heat
A stable chip that survived six months can run the length of the glass in one afternoon. The mechanism is simple, and mostly avoidable.

A chip that has sat quietly in your windshield since March can run the full width of the glass on a single August afternoon in Dallas. People assume something hit it. Usually nothing did.
What is actually happening
Glass expands when it heats and contracts when it cools. That is unremarkable until you notice that a windshield is never at one temperature.
On a Dallas summer afternoon, a parked car develops a substantial temperature gradient across a single pane. The upper portion sits in direct sun. The lower portion is shaded by the cowl. The edges are bonded to body metal that is conducting heat differently again. The centre may be over a dark dashboard that is radiating heat back up into the glass.
Different parts of one pane are therefore trying to be different sizes at the same time. That is thermal stress, and it is present in every windshield in Texas, every summer day.
An intact windshield handles it. A windshield with a chip does not, because the chip is a stress concentrator — a discontinuity where all that accumulated stress finds a place to release. That release is the crack running.
The trigger is usually not the peak temperature. It is the rate of change.
The four habits that cause most of it
1. Air conditioning straight onto hot glass. You get into a car that has been baking, and the first thing you do is set the fan to maximum and point the vents at the windshield. You have just applied cold air to the inner surface of glass whose outer surface is still extremely hot. The two faces of the same pane now want to be different sizes.
Ease into it. Windows down for the first minute to dump the hot air, fan low, vents toward the floor first, and let the cabin come down gradually.
2. Cold water on a hot windshield. Washing the car in the afternoon sun, or running the washers onto glass that has been in direct sun for hours. Same mechanism, more abrupt. Wash in the morning or the evening.
3. Defroster on full on a cold morning. The winter version of the same mistake. Dallas gets genuine cold snaps, and blasting maximum heat onto a frozen windshield is a thermal shock in the other direction. Start on low and let it come up.
4. Pouring hot water on ice. It clears the ice and it can crack the glass. Use the scraper.
Why Dallas is harder on glass than most places
Several things compound here.
Heat, sustained. Long stretches of triple-digit afternoons mean the parked-car thermal cycle repeats daily for months.
Swings. North Texas produces genuinely large day-to-night temperature differences, and shoulder seasons where a morning frost is followed by a warm afternoon.
Road debris volume. Sustained construction across the Metroplex and heavy freight traffic on I-20, I-30, I-35E and I-635 put a lot of loose aggregate on the road, which is where the chip comes from in the first place.

The chip is a road-debris problem. The crack is a thermal problem. Dallas supplies both generously.
How hot a parked car in Dallas actually gets
The numbers explain why this is worse here than most places.
On a genuine Texas summer afternoon, ambient air in the high 90s or low 100s produces a dashboard surface far hotter than the air — dark plastic in direct sun through glass behaves like a solar collector. The cabin air sits well above outside temperature, and the inner surface of the windshield is being heated from below by the dash radiating upward and from outside by direct sun.
Meanwhile the lower edge of the same pane is shaded by the cowl, and the perimeter is bonded to body metal that is conducting heat away at a different rate.
So a single sheet of glass has: a hot upper centre, a cooler shaded base, and edges constrained by a frame that is expanding at a different rate to the glass itself.
Every part is trying to be a slightly different size, and they are all attached to each other. That is thermal stress, and in a Dallas July it is present every single afternoon.
Why the edge is where it starts
Almost every stress crack begins at or near the perimeter, and there are two reasons.
Mechanically, the edge is where the glass is constrained. The centre of a pane can expand and bow slightly. The edge is bonded to a frame and cannot. All the accumulated differential expansion has to resolve somewhere, and it resolves where the glass is held.
Microscopically, the edge is where the flaws are. Glass is cut, and cutting leaves microscopic edge defects invisible to the eye. Those are stress concentrators, ready-made crack initiation sites.
Combine a stress concentrator with a location that carries the most load and you have the standard origin of a crack that appeared "for no reason".
It is also why edge damage is treated so seriously in the repair-or-replace decision — a chip within two inches of the perimeter sits in the worst possible place.
Why the rate of change matters more than the peak
A windshield that heats slowly and evenly to a high temperature is under far less stress than one that is hot in one region and suddenly cooled in another.
Glass conducts heat poorly. Cool one face rapidly and it contracts before the other face has any idea what happened. The two faces of a single pane are now different sizes, bonded together, and the resulting stress has to go somewhere.
This is why the four habits below matter more than parking in the shade — shade lowers the peak, but avoiding sudden changes lowers the gradient, and the gradient is what breaks glass.
The Texas seasonal pattern
The risk is not constant through the year.
March–June. Hail season, and large daily temperature swings. Chips arrive and get stressed immediately. See the DFW hail season guide.
July–September. Peak thermal cycling. The most reliable time of year for a stable chip to become a crack. Every afternoon repeats the cycle.
October–November. Second hail peak, plus genuine day-to-night swings as fronts move through — a 70°F afternoon and a 40°F morning in the same 24 hours.
December–February. Cold snaps, defroster shock, and the occasional freeze where people pour hot water on ice.
There is no quiet season. There is a worst season, and it is the one where a windshield spends every afternoon at temperature.
What to do about an existing chip
Tape it. Clear packing tape over the chip keeps dirt and water out. It does nothing for the stress, but it protects the repairability of the break, which is the thing you are trying to preserve.
Park in shade where you can. A garage, a covered space, or even facing away from the afternoon sun reduces the daily cycle. A windshield sunshade genuinely helps by keeping the dash from radiating heat back into the glass.
Moderate the temperature changes, per the four habits above.
Get it looked at quickly. Everything above is delay, not repair. A fresh chip repairs well and cheaply. A chip that has been through a Texas summer collecting dirt repairs poorly, and a chip that has run is not a repair at all — it is a windshield replacement.
The honest version
None of the above stops a crack indefinitely. It buys time and improves the odds of a clean repair.
The decision that actually matters is how quickly you act. A repair is inexpensive, often quick, and frequently covered by insurance without a deductible. A replacement costs considerably more, and on a modern vehicle it brings camera recalibration with it.
The gap between those two outcomes is usually a few weeks of procrastination in the wrong season.
