Which vehicles need ADAS calibration after a windshield replacement?

The badge on the boot does not tell you. The marketing name for the safety suite does, and the VIN settles it.

If your vehicle has a camera behind the rear-view mirror, replacing the windshield moves it, and it has to be re-aimed. The question is whether yours has one — and if so, which procedure it needs.

Two things make this harder than it should be. Manufacturers give the same underlying technology different marketing names, and the same model can have the camera on one trim and not on another. So the badge on the boot tells you nothing useful.

Here is how to work it out.

The 30-second check

Look behind your rear-view mirror, from inside the car.

If there is a black plastic housing mounted to the glass, roughly the size of a fist, with one or two lenses looking forward — you have a windshield-mounted camera, and glass work means recalibration.

If the area behind the mirror is bare glass, or has only a small rain sensor pad, you probably do not.

Then check your dashboard. Do you have any of these?

  • Lane departure warning or lane keeping assist
  • Automatic emergency braking / forward collision warning
  • Adaptive or radar cruise control
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Automatic high beams

Any one of them almost certainly means a forward camera.

Manufacturer system names

The same capability, branded differently. If your vehicle has one of these, it has a camera:

The list is a guide, not a determination. Trim level decides it, which is why we ask for the VIN rather than the model.

Static, dynamic, or both

Which procedure applies is set by the manufacturer, not by the shop.

Static

The vehicle stays still. Printed targets are positioned at manufacturer-specified distances, heights and lateral offsets from the vehicle centreline, and the camera is taught what it should be seeing.

Needs level floor space, measured clearance around the vehicle, and controlled lighting. This is the one that cannot be done in your driveway — not because we would rather not, but because a sloping drive and variable daylight defeat the procedure.

Dynamic

The vehicle is driven within a specified speed range on roads with clear lane markings while the system re-learns.

Sounds easier, and often is, but it has its own failure modes. Faded markings, stop-start traffic and rain can all prevent completion. In Dallas that is a real scheduling variable — a dynamic calibration that needs sustained speed on well-marked road is not a 5pm job on I-635.

Both

A number of systems require a static procedure followed by a dynamic one, in that order. Honda Sensing and Subaru EyeSight are commonly cited examples.

Where both are required, completing one is not partial success. It is an incomplete calibration.

The prerequisites that get skipped

Calibration assumes the vehicle is in a defined reference state. Miss these and the procedure can report success while producing a wrong result:

  • Correct tyre pressures on all four corners
  • Level ground
  • Unloaded vehicle — no cargo, no passengers; some manufacturers specify a fuel level
  • Correct ride height, with no suspension modification
  • Clean glass in the camera's field of view
  • Correct wheel alignment — a vehicle that tracks crooked confuses a road-referenced procedure

Two of these matter disproportionately in North Texas.

Lifted and levelled trucks. Changing ride height changes the camera's angle to the road. If your truck is modified, say so when booking — it affects whether calibration can be completed to specification. See the F-150 guide.

Loaded work vehicles. A bed or van full of tools changes the vehicle's attitude. Empty it before the appointment.

Other sensors, and which ones glass work touches

A modern vehicle has several sensors. Only some are affected by a windshield replacement, and conflating them causes confusion.

Windshield-mounted forward camera — the one this page is about. Directly affected. Requires recalibration.

Grille or bumper radar — used for adaptive cruise and collision warning. Not affected by glass work. It only needs attention after front-end damage or bumper removal. If a shop tells you your radar needs recalibrating because of a windshield, ask why.

Rain and light sensor — mounted to the windshield, but it is not aimed. It needs correct optical coupling to the new glass, which is a fitting matter. If your wipers behave oddly afterwards, that is the coupling pad, not a calibration.

Rear and surround-view cameras — unaffected.

Blind spot monitors — usually radar in the rear quarters. Unaffected.

Heads-up display — not a sensor, but glass-dependent. It needs the correct optical wedge in the pane, and getting it wrong produces a doubled image no calibration can fix.

The short version: windshield work affects the forward camera and the rain sensor. Everything else on that list is someone else's problem.

What happens if the calibration will not complete

Occasionally a calibration fails repeatedly. Three usual causes, in order of likelihood:

The glass. Optical distortion in the camera's viewing zone, a coating that should not be there, or a bracket at a marginally wrong angle. This is the most common cause and the strongest argument for known-good glass. See OEM vs OE-equivalent.

The vehicle state. Wrong tyre pressures, a loaded vehicle, a modified ride height, or an alignment issue. All fixable, all worth checking before blaming the glass.

A pre-existing fault. Something that was already wrong before the glass came out — which is exactly why a pre-scan is done first. Without it there is no way to distinguish a fault we caused from one that was already there.

A shop that pre-scans is protecting you as much as itself.

Vehicles that usually do not need it

  • Most vehicles built before roughly 2015, though there are early exceptions
  • Base trims of otherwise-equipped models, where the package was optional
  • Vehicles whose only camera is rear-facing for parking — that is not affected by windshield work
  • Vehicles with radar behind the grille but no windshield camera, though these are increasingly rare

A rain sensor alone does not require calibration. It needs correct optical coupling to the new glass, which is a fitting matter rather than an aiming one.

How we determine it

  1. VIN. It resolves the exact build and the options actually fitted.
  2. A photo behind the mirror. Confirms what is physically there.
  3. Manufacturer procedure lookup. Static, dynamic or both, for that specific vehicle.
  4. Site check. If it needs static, we establish where that will happen before booking, not on the day.

That is why the quote request asks for the VIN and a photo of the mirror area. It is not administrative — it is the difference between a firm quote and a revision.

What you should receive afterwards

A post-calibration scan report: the diagnostic record confirming the procedure completed and no faults remain.

Keep it. It matters for insurance and at resale, and it is the only real evidence the safety systems were verified.

Critically, the absence of a dashboard warning light is not evidence of anything. Some vehicles set a fault when the camera is disturbed. Many do not. Does it cost more?

Yes, and it should be in the quote from the start rather than added later. A quote for an ADAS-equipped vehicle that does not mention calibration is not cheaper — it is incomplete. See what drives windshield replacement cost.

Where calibration is required after a covered replacement, it is normally part of the same insurance claim, because it is a necessary part of completing the repair correctly.
