ADAS calibration after windshield replacement, explained
A camera out by a fraction of a degree at the glass is out by a lane width at the distance where it has to make a braking decision.

If your vehicle has lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control or traffic sign recognition, there is a camera mounted to the inside of your windshield looking forward through the glass.
Replace the glass and that camera moves. Recalibration is how it gets re-aimed. This is the step most likely to be skipped quietly, because the vehicle drives away looking completely normal either way.
Why moving the glass matters so much
The camera is not just pointed forward; it is aimed, and its software assumes a precise geometric relationship between the sensor and the road ahead.
When a windshield comes out and a new one goes in, several small things change: the bracket seats marginally differently, the glass thickness can vary slightly within tolerance, the mounting angle shifts by a fraction of a degree.
A fraction of a degree sounds trivial. It is not, because error scales with distance. A camera misaligned by a small angle at the glass is misaligned by a substantial lateral distance at 100 metres — which is precisely the range at which the system is deciding whether the car ahead is in your lane or the next one, and whether to brake.
These systems intervene in braking and steering. Approximately right is not the standard.
Static, dynamic, or both
Which procedure your vehicle needs is set by its manufacturer. It is looked up per vehicle, not assumed.
Static calibration happens with the vehicle stationary. Printed targets are positioned at manufacturer-specified distances, heights and lateral offsets from the vehicle centreline, and the camera is taught what it should be seeing. This needs level floor space, room around the vehicle and controlled lighting. It is not a roadside procedure, and it is not a driveway procedure.
Dynamic calibration happens on the road. The vehicle is driven within a specified speed range on roads with clear lane markings while the system re-learns. Faded markings, heavy traffic and bad weather can all defeat it and force a retry — which in Dallas traffic is a real scheduling variable.
Both is required by a number of systems, in a specified order. Honda Sensing and Subaru EyeSight are commonly cited examples. Where both are required, doing one is not a partial success; it is an incomplete calibration.
The prerequisites nobody mentions
Calibration assumes the vehicle is in a defined reference state. Skip these and the procedure can complete successfully while producing a calibration that is wrong:
- correct tyre pressures on all four corners
- level ground
- an unloaded vehicle — no cargo, no passengers, sometimes a specified fuel level
- correct ride height, with no suspension modifications
- a clean windshield in the camera's field of view
This is why a calibration done properly takes as long as it does, and why "we calibrated it in ten minutes in the car park" deserves a follow-up question.
Why this became a windshield problem at all
A fair question: cameras have existed for years, so why is calibration suddenly part of a glass job?
Because manufacturers chose the windshield as the mounting point, and it is a good choice. The camera needs an unobstructed forward view, protection from weather and road debris, a wiper keeping its field of view clear, and a position high enough to see over the vehicle ahead. Behind the rear-view mirror satisfies all four.
The trade-off is that the sensor is now attached to a consumable component. A windshield is one of the few structural parts of a car routinely expected to be replaced during ordinary ownership — and every replacement disturbs the sensor bolted to it.
That is the whole reason a routine glass job acquired a calibration step. Nothing went wrong; a packaging decision coupled a wear item to a safety sensor.
It also explains why the requirement keeps expanding. As driver assistance moves from an option on premium trims to standard equipment across entire ranges, the proportion of windshield jobs that include calibration climbs with it. How to verify it was actually done
Ask for the post-calibration scan report.
Before the work, the vehicle should be scanned to record any pre-existing fault codes. After the calibration, it is scanned again to confirm the procedure completed and no faults remain. That second report is your evidence.
Keep it. It matters for an insurance claim, and it matters at resale — it is documentary proof the safety systems were verified after glass work.
Important: the absence of a warning light is not proof of calibration. Some vehicles set a fault when the camera is disturbed. Many do not. A car with a misaligned camera and a clean dashboard is a completely normal outcome, which is exactly what makes this worth checking.
What the error actually looks like at distance
The abstract claim is that small angular errors matter. Here is why, concretely.
A camera's aim is an angle. An angular error produces a lateral error that grows with distance — the further away the object, the further off your estimate of where it sits.
At the ranges these systems operate — an adaptive cruise system tracking a vehicle a hundred metres ahead, an automatic braking system deciding whether an obstacle is in your lane or the next one — an error that is millimetres at the glass becomes a meaningful fraction of a lane width at the target.
That is the failure mode worth picturing: not the system doing something dramatic, but the system placing the car ahead slightly into the wrong lane. Either it brakes for something that was never in your path, or it does not brake for something that was.
Neither behaviour announces itself. Both feel like the system being "occasionally odd" rather than being wrong.
What actually goes wrong when it is skipped
Four realistic outcomes, in rough order of how often we hear about them.
Nothing, for a while. The most common short-term result, and the reason skipping it is tempting. The car drives normally, no lights, no complaints.
Lane keeping that fights you. Small steering corrections at slightly the wrong moment, or drifting toward one side of the lane. Owners often blame the road or the alignment.
Adaptive cruise that behaves inconsistently. Braking late, braking for vehicles in an adjacent lane, or dropping out on curves. On vehicles that fuse camera and radar, the two disagree and the system disables itself — which is actually the good outcome, because it surfaces the problem.
Automatic emergency braking with the wrong reference. The one that matters. A system intervening in braking, using a sensor that is aimed wrong, in the situation it exists for.
There is a version of this that is worse than the system being switched off: a system that is on, that you trust, and that is reading the road from a reference nobody verified.
Who can actually perform it
Three routes, and the trade-offs are real.
The dealer. Manufacturer procedures, manufacturer targets, manufacturer software. The most conservative choice, usually the most expensive, and requires a service appointment.
A glass company that calibrates in-house. Convenient — one appointment, one invoice, one party accountable if the calibration will not complete on the glass they fitted. What matters is whether they have the equipment and the space for static procedures, or whether "we calibrate" quietly means "we drive it around the block".
A specialist calibration centre. Some glass companies subcontract to one. Nothing wrong with that if it is disclosed. Ask, because it affects your day — the vehicle goes to a second location.
The question that separates them is not the marketing. Ask: which procedure does my vehicle need, where will it be done, and will I get the scan report?
What drives the cost
- Static, dynamic or both. Both is the most expensive case.
- Manufacturer procedure. Some marques have long procedures with multiple target positions; others are comparatively quick.
- Number of systems. A forward camera alone is simpler than a vehicle combining camera, radar and a surround-view system that cross-reference.
- Site suitability. If a static calibration cannot happen where the vehicle is, it has to happen somewhere it can.
- Retries. A dynamic calibration defeated by traffic or faded markings costs road time.
Where calibration is required after a covered replacement, it is normally part of the same insurance claim — it is a necessary part of completing the repair correctly, not an optional extra.
Common questions
Does every windshield replacement need it? No — only vehicles with a windshield-mounted forward camera or equivalent sensor. Plenty of older vehicles have none. The VIN plus a look at what is mounted behind the rear-view mirror settles it.

Does the glass itself affect calibration? Yes. The camera looks through the windshield, so the optical quality of the glass in that zone matters, along with the correct bracket and any required coatings. What if I skip it? The systems will likely still operate, reading the road from a wrong reference. That is arguably worse than them being switched off, because you will trust them.
